Featured in Run Minnesota’s Gbaoso Collection runway show, this design by Wealth Ndego blends fashion and movement. “Gbaoso” means “to run” — a reflection of the power of running to bring people together across backgrounds.
The design on these socks is the Kola Nut. Native to West African regions, the kola nut (Cola Acuminata or Cola Nitida) is the seed of the kola fruit from the kola tree. While it holds cultural importance across many West African ethnic groups, in Igbo culture it is revered as “the king of all fruits” for its central role in social and religious traditions.
The meaning of the kola nut often depends on the number of lobes it carries. A two-lobed kola (Oji Agbara) is seen as unstable and a bad omen. In this collection, the kola nut is designed with four lobes (Oji ibe eno), also called Oji Udo na Ngozi — which translates to “kola nut of peace, harmony, and blessings.”
